Tips for Storing Batteries in Birdzout Solar Kits

Tips for Storing Batteries in Birdzout Solar Kits

Storing batteries properly over winter (or any extended period of time) is crucial to preserving their life and performance.

General Tips for All Battery Types

Store in a Cool, Dry Place
Ideal storage temperature: 4°C to 15°C
Avoid freezing temperatures and high humidity.

Avoid Full Discharge
Never store batteries completely dead; this can lead to permanent capacity loss.

Disconnect or Remove from Devices
Prevent corrosion and drain by disconnecting and removing batteries, don't leave connected to solar panels.

Avoid Metal Contact
Keep terminals from touching metal objects to avoid short-circuits. Store in original packaging or the weather proof case provided

Battery-Specific Guidelines

Lithium-Ion (Li-ion)

  • Check Every 3–6 Months.
  • Recharge if it drops below 30%.
  • Do Not Freeze - cold can damage internal components.

Lead-Acid

  • Must be fully charged before storage.
  • Use a smart charger to keep voltage stable.
  • Avoid Freezing - A discharged lead-acid battery can freeze more easily.

Bonus Tips

Label & Rotate
Mark storage dates and rotate batteries so older ones are used first.

Inspect for Damage:
Swollen, leaking, or corroded batteries should not be used.

Ventilation
Store in a ventilated area to prevent gas buildup (especially lead-acid batteries).
