Rosellas

The Rosella was introduced to New Zealand in the early 1900's and is now common throughout the North Island and in the Dunedin area. They are a bright coloured bird with red, yellow, green and blue, and a long tail.

They are mainly seen in open areas, with a few trees, or on the edges of native forests, and are often seen in urban parks, gardens and golf courses. Are a swift flying, noisy bird, that likes being seen. They nest in small hollows or trees.

Often feeding in flocks, they mainly eat seed, and also, berries, blossoms, buds, fruit, insects, leaves and nectar.

Rosellas are considered pests in orchards as they not only damage fruit, but also the blossoms, buds and flowers.
